Barry Keoghan recently came out and said that he doesn’t leave his house anymore because of how much the public has talked about his looks. As someone who has seen and understood the vision since Eternals (2021), it’s really sad to me that he feels that way. I always thought he was handsome and he even did his thing glowing up a bit when he was with Sabrina. But the last couple years, after a few rounds of surgeries, filler, and spray tans…he’s taken it too far and morphed himself into what the public thinks of him.

I don’t feel amazing further talking about something that a celebrity has publically expressed insecurity about, but I think there’s a bigger issue at hand that’s important to discuss. I’m very lucky to have been a teenager (when you’re arguably the most self-conscious) during the body positivity movement because it gave me a good foundation to be confident in myself. At the time (2016), Alicia Keys wearing no makeup was revolutionary, Ashley Graham was the first plus-size model to be openly celebrated (she wasn’t even that big mind you), and diversity was celebrated.

Now The Best of Us are Botched

But this? This is a problem. Celebrities have been getting plastic surgery for decades now, that’s no secret. For the most part, surgery was meant to subtly enhance their beauty, and once in a while, over the last 50-something years, there would be a few outliers. There would be a handful of celebrities that took it too far, publically showing a tragic loss to the battle with insecurity. Courtney Cox was stunning as a young girl, but after Friends, took the face modifications to an extreme. She definitely looks way better, but she looked uncanny for a while. It’s awful because I can’t imagine how it would feel to constantly worry about how others perceived every angle of you, but it’s an even worse fate to succumb to those insecurities and disfigure the face you were given.

Back then it was few and far between, but now, in the big 2026, we’re seeing more and more celebrities botch and disfigure their faces. The worst part, and most telling, is that it’s not just the women anymore, it’s the men too. Ryan Gosling doesn’t look bad, but his face has gotten waxy looking since Barbie. Emily Blunt and Selena Gomez got cheek filler that is way too striking for their faces, and Bradley Cooper got surgery on his eyelids that make him look less like Bradley Cooper and more like Bradley Cooper’s distant relative. It’s honestly really concerning. Celebrities are supposed to have access to the surgeons the general public can’t access, and they’re looked at as the most beautiful people in. Yet, they keep popping out with terrible veneers, lopsided lip filler, and immovable, unbalanced faces.

Veneers Vs. Individuality

Veneers are a prime example of how perfectionism is a losing battle. There’s an entire community on TikTok that mourns the loss of celebrity teeth because as a reminder, Veneers require the shaving down of your natural teeth to implant them. There’s no going back to your teeth once you get them. It’s sad because everyone has their own unique set of teeth that are meant to fit their face. Of course there are people like me with a crowded bottom row, people who are missing teeth, etc., etc., but that’s still what makes them unique. Teeth shape our faces more than we think and putting big chompers in a small mouth doesn’t look all that great. Celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez, who had nothing wrong with their teeth, can barely close their mouth!

Veneers are a stark reminder of how beautiful natural beauty and individuality are. It’s been almost a decade of Kardashian-induced perfectionism and the truth is that the people yearn for unique human features. You can’t keep fighting age, you can’t keep searching for perfectionism because you’re never going to win those battles, and most likely you’re going to desire a look that’s not meant for your face. Yes, some people are blessed in this world to be conventionally attractive to almost all, but that doesn’t mean that the rest of us are ugly or deserve to be discarded.

Barry Keoghan really does make me sad because I’ve been getting bullied by my friends for years now for thinking that he’s hot. Is he a Brad Pitt type? No, but I saw him in Eternals and fell for his charm because the chemistry he has with Lauren Ridloff (Makarri) was crazzzzyyyy. Social media has brainwashed us into thinking we need to be the most beautiful specimen on this earth by achieving levels of perfection only some are naturally blessed with, but we’re not all supposed to look like that. Humanity is beautiful because of how diverse we are and not everyone is attracted to the same face.

Yet here we are making ourselves look like the same three people. The harsh, but honest, reality is that our faces are so different that we’re not meant to carry out every trends. Not all of us are meant to have big lips because our face can’t carry the weight. Not all of us are meant to be 90 pounds and not all men are supposed to have a Crimson chin, and sorry to keep dunking on my man Barry, but truly his face was not meant to look the way it does now. His face was meant to carry the features he was given. Nothing wrong with a little enhancement here or there, God knows I struggle with my own insecurities, but when celebrities, especially male celebrities, start to look a little crazy, the rest of us are in trouble.

Stop Looking in the Damn Mirror

Because let me be a little honest here. I’m single for the first time in five years and one thing I’ve been really struggling with is my looks, especially since I’ve started posting content online. I’m thinking about my face a lot more and if potential partners find me attractive, how they’re perceiving me, and at what angles I look unattractive from. It’s obsessive and something I have to constantly fight, but what brings me back down to Earth is that our looks are not the only quality we have.

We’re so used to social media, perfection, and portraying ourselves in the best light, that we focus all of our self-worth on surface level attraction. We, or at least I, tend to fall into the habit of thinking that people care about how I look as much as I do, but that’s not what makes a person a person. The truth is that looks fade and all that gets left behind is who you are on the inside. It’s corny, but it’s true and applicable ESPECIALLY to actors and musicians. We’ve lost the plot a bit about what it means to be human and filling your face frozen affects your ability to story tell.

Does Emma Stone look great? She sure does, but at the same time, she’s an Oscar-winning actress, whose face is her canvas. Audiences came to love Emma Stone because she looked real and because of her talent, but the surgeries she, and other actors, are getting are messing around with their livelihoods and legacies. Millie Bobby Brown was the butt of Stranger Things 5 jokes because she could hardly move her face, and she’s only 22. She has the talent, but all people could focus on was her face when she tried to cry.

The majority of actors and actresses are brought into the spotlight because they’re good looking, but the real reason they’re supposed to be there is to tell stories with their faces, to contort their flesh into the emotions of real, everyday people. Some of the best performances I’ve seen are from actors that look insane, puffy, red, old, and wrinkled. I remember watching watching the Squid Game press tour and being genuinely shocked by how different everyone looked from the show. Even Jesse Buckley, this year’s best actress, is a good example of this. She portrayed a mother giving birth and grieving the loss of her child. Did she look amazing at every angle and every shot? No because she was portraying raw, human emotion. Now did she look amazing during award show season? Absolutely, she did.

Don’t Lose the Plot!

Everyone has something they’re insecure about. For me it’s my nose and my chin, but does that make me unloveable? No. It’s normal to be insecure, it’s normalized to get a little work done here and there, but it’s also okay to be who you are. It feels silly to be reminding people of this, but your unique features are truly what make you who you are. The people who are meant for you will love you for more than what you look like and if you plan on having a career in Hollywood or online, know that the people yearn for real faces.

I hope the celebs drop that one surgeon that’s terrorizing them all, or at least stop showing them that tired reference photo that’s getting them into this mess. But for real, celebrate your natural features because we do not need any more insta baddies or crimson chins in this world. Long live the big noses, bushy brows, and little lips (oh hey that’s Jacob Elordi). May your face, assymetrical from sleeping on your side, attract the love of your life and may you find the courage to age gracefully. 🩷

I could not believe my eyes when I was scrolling through TikTok and saw somebody call Margot Robbie an aging actress under a Wuthering Heights interview. Then a friend of mine sent this TikTok about 25+ not being able to participate in the “young ho,” trend. I have been stopped in my tracks and have come here to rant. Listen to me, a 24 year old, my friends. We need to stop falling for this narrative that “aging bad, 25 old” because first of all, 30 used to be the designated death sentence age. Not only are we rewinding, but we’re just dead wrong. Sure it’s a funny joke, but it’s also becoming so widespread and normalized that I’M NOT LAUGHING. I mean remember that weird Sombr drama where Sombr (20) shaded that 25 year-old who was making valid critiques on her concert experience? I do! And baby time moves fast, if you think 25 is old, then prepare to suffer for idk the rest of your life???

Let me tell you a story, because no, I’m not mad that I’m entering my mid-twenties. I’m mad that we’ve been sold this lie that our prime is 18-24 and that I believed it. If you’re rich and famous then I’m not really talking to you because your prime is your whole life. But if you’re someone like me from an average working class household, then please relax on this mindset. When I was a teenager, I didn’t have much money or the typical teen experience. When I went to college, I also didn’t have much money and COVID happened, and my early 20’s were just alright. There was no magic to them, not in the way I was told, and when I graduated college at 21 (prime age where you feel old af for some reason), I STILL had no money!

And as a writer, I was incredibly hard on myself for not having accomplished much. I had former classmates that were being featured in the New York Times, working for Penguin Random House, and peers getting published in magazines. Yet, there I was, living in my mom’s basement, struggling to find a job, and hating my life while people were employed, traveling, and accomplishing their dreams. I look back at the time period in my life and feel badly for that version of myself because she was so miserable. Why? I had this idea that you were supposed to have everything figured out and life was supposed to be so amazing at that age.

I’m 24 now and I’ve learned a lot since I was 18. You’re not likely to have everything figured out. I was in a long term relationship while struggling with my career and dreams, but now that I’m making strides and finding my voice as a writer, I’m no longer in that relationship. What does Olivia Rodrigo say, 1 step forward, 2 steps back? That’s pretty much what my 20’s have been. Why does anyone expect things to be figured out so early? Again, there are anomalies, and most wealthy people can expect to have a phenomenal time in their 20’s, but damn dude, for the most part you’re broke and don’t know anything.

Once you relieve that pressure of trying to figure everything out, life get a lot easier. This applies to everything really. Love and marriage can wait for the right person. Finding a job is insanely difficult right now and you’re not alone in that struggle. Living at home is commonplace in this economy and is nothing to be ashamed of if you’re trying to set yourself up for success. And if you’re a creative like me, there’s nothing more frustrating then musician’s, artists, writers, etc., that pop off at a young age. It makes you feel crazy and like you’re being overlooked, but the reality is that, again, those are anomalies, and it takes YEARS to hone your craft.

I used to paint like I was running out of time and would be baffled to learn that it took some of the greats YEARS to finish a painting. Who has time and patience for that? I wanted to be rich and famous right then and there. But countless rejection letters, road blocks, and many a lesson learned taught me that there is a lot of value in taking your time. Look at the most talented person you know. My ex’s dad is an exceptional cook, dare I say chef. That man can cook a mean dinner and would make extremely elaborate dishes that required days of preparation. Every appetizer, steak, recipe he tried, was like something I’ve never experienced outside of a restaurant. But guess what? At some point in time, he probably burnt a few omelets, overcooked the pasta, or made a recipe super wrong. And the point in time that I met him was a product of years of learning, researching, and trial-and-error. It’s the only way for us non-prodigal folks.

wElL TeChNiCalLy MaRgOt Is An AgInG aCtReSs aNd ThErE’s A nEw GeNeRaTiOn oF AcTrEsSes tHaT wIlL eVeNtuAlLy RePlAcE hEr. Omg first of all shut up. Duh, we’re all aging from the time we’re born. And this definitely plays into the larger issue of putting expiration dates on women in the entertainment industry and in real life. I, for one, am grateful that by some grace of God I am immune to the fear of being an “old mom.” I will have kids, if and when I have them. I’m not going to put an insane amount of pressure on myself to quickly find someone, marry, and expedite children. Would you take a cake out of the oven before it’s done? No! I will be ready when I’m ready and you should relieve yourself of that pressure too because not everyone’s journey will be completed by the age of 25.

For Margot Robbie, specifically, I think she’s had an excellent career and is still going strong. She got her big break in Wolf of Wall Street and instead of leaning hard into the Megan Fox-ification of her image, she was able to hone her craft, and level up into founding a production company. She’s starred in great films, but she’s also produced movies like Saltburn, Barbie, and Promising Young Woman. Now she’s the protagonist in a romance film at age 35. Which I personally do not find old, but I think is something women everywhere need to see, even if she is Margot Hottie.

tbh Wuthering Heights is a conversation for another day. I’m aware of the literary community’s critiques, but I’m also aware of Emerald Fennell’s filmography. So I think I’m going to have to wait until the film comes out to cast my judgement.

Anyways, like Addison Rae says, the world is your oyster and you’re the only girl! Live your life. 25 is not old and if you go on thinking that 18-24 is the only time you have in your life to succeed and have fun then baby, you’re dead wrong and you will be miserable for the next 75-ish years. I know people who found the love of their life in their 40’s, women who changed careers in their 50’s, and like, Harrison Ford or whatever. Don’t be one of those people worrying about dressing age-appropriate or whether you’re too old to have a night on the town. Our paths are different and you should be able to enjoy yourself all the time. I’d quote Harry, but I’m still mad about the ticket prices. 💔

2025 was a fun year for film and television. We finally left the COVID/Writer’s strike bubble that gave us a long stretch of nothingness and because of that, Gen-Z got a few hits that have the potential to define our generation. FX’s Adults, Prime’s Overcompensating, and recently, Rachel Sennott’s HBO series, I Love LA, were all released this year, and I really enjoyed them. Adults took me a second to get into, but the cast is new and charismatic (ily Amita Rao) and the storylines are fun. Overcompensating was probably my favorite because it introduced the public to Holmes and was the answer to my problem of not having enough coming-of-age college media. The market is oversaturated with high school dramas and this was EXACTLY what we needed. But I Love LA is my latest watch and I feel like it’s just okay. I love Rachel Sennott, I follow her through all her projects, I missed seeing Josh Hutcherson’s face on my screen, and I’m very content with the fresh faces on the cast…but it’s missing something? And honestly, it’s kind of what they’re all missing—time!

The 10-episode epidemic

Way back when, even before my day, 24 episodes were the standard for cable television. It was something to do with the airing schedule and longer seasons made them more ad revenue. Then, networks like HBO and AMC popped up with a subscription model and because they weren’t bound to a tight schedule, found 10-13 episode models to be more effective, which would ultimately be adopted by streaming services. It’s all money-motivated. Are we surprised? It was around the late 90’s to early 2000’s that this became popular. Some of the biggest shows, like Friends and Sex and the City, still had 18-24 episodes. While others like The Sopranos had an average of 13 episodes per season.

Once we got to the 2010’s, the short season model was in full swing, with popular shows like Girls, Breaking Bad, and American Horror Story having 10-13 models. The other factor we have to consider was the duration of episodes that was also evolving. While episodes were around 30 minutes long before, studios were compensating with 45 minute to hour long episodes. Which, from a craft perspective, is interesting because TV episodes had previously been formatted to fit 30 minute time slots and in my opinion, longer duration times began to blur the lines between television and cinema.

The Television Twilight Zone

When shows began to extend the duration of episodes as streaming increased in popularity and studios like FX, AMC, and HBO dominated the scene, that’s when we entered what I call the television twilight zone. Before the 21st century, television shows weren’t taken as seriously as film. I mean it’s the big screen versus the silver screen, and serious actors and actresses wouldn’t take on tv roles unless their careers were tanking. It never made sense to me when I was in film classes and the professors and cinephiles would talk about how TV wasn’t on the same level.

How could that make sense? To me, it’s all art, just in different formatting. Maybe in the past when sitcoms were 30 minutes and formulaic for the laughs, but even then, Full House brought me a lot of comfort. As we progressed to shows like Sex and the City or The Sopranos, we were spending more time with characters, watching them change and grow, and sitting down every week to see a good story unfold as each episode led to the next. Even with SATC’s 30 minute episodes, we got to peak into the lives of four women that my friends and I could relate to.

It’s the 45-60 minute long episodes, however, that put a wrinkle in the timeline because longer episodes meant more depth, more breadth, and more room for writers to expand the worlds they were creating. But wasn’t the purpose of television to just unwind after work? Catch a show or two after dinner before heading to bed? Movies were the events. You would go to the movies to sit down, grab a popcorn, and consume longer form media as an outing. There was purpose and intention for both film and television, but now things were changing and the deeper we got with shows like Game of Thrones or American Horror Story, the more sensationalized television became.

People have always talked about “last night’s episode” around the water cooler, but television was evolving to become an event of it’s own. A weekly one at that. I had no interest in Game of Thrones as a teen, but even so, some of my greatest memories were the family gatherings we’d have every Sunday to watch the latest episode. This was great, you could have the exciting, communal feeling you get from watching a film at the theater, from the comfort of your couch. Then you could talk about it live online, and the next day at school or work. It was global connection at it’s finest. Then, the streaming wars intensified and COVID foiled our fun once again!

Enter The Gilded Age of Television.

I think Euphoria was the start of this Gilded Age of Television and one of the first series’ ownable to Gen-Z. The first season aired the summer of 2019 on HBO, with one episode a week for a total of eight episodes, each around 50-65 minutes. Structurally, a strange quantity of episodes and varying episode lengths, but not unusual for HBO. It didn’t really matter though because season one of Euphoria was electric. Teens, and young adults everywhere, fell in love with the new generation of actors, and would sit down every week to absorb the show in all its glory. The story was interesting, the makeup was beautiful, and the cinematography was impressive. It was an aesthetically pleasing show with a strong plot. Then COVID happened.

We wouldn’t get another season until 2022, with the exception of the two episodes we got in December 2020 and January 2021. Audiences were thrilled for the show to return and when it did, with another 8 episodes, just for a second we got the sensational thrill of watching an episode every week with friends for Euphoria Sunday, waiting on the edge of our seats as the tension skyrocketed amongst the characters…just for the show to barely stick the landing. I’ve already written about Euphoria and the Sam Levinson of it all so you can go back and check that out, but the point is that the ending of the season wasn’t very satisfying. Levinson had spent most of the season creating subplots, building tension, and putting the characters in crazy situations (what happens with Lori and the suitcase???) just to leave fans with a bunch of loose ends and a third season nowhere in sight.

But this wasn’t just a Sam Levinson thing, or a HBO thing, this was the start of a really annoying pattern. And, then of course, the writer’s strike happened, bringing more change and obstacles to the world of television. Leading us to…

The State of Television in 2025

The thing is, we’re right in the middle of this gilded age of television and after watching new shows all year long, I’ve had a lot of time to think. I Love LA, being the most recent release, was good, but it left me and many others a bit peckish. It’s a good show, don’t get me wrong. It’s first season had 8 episodes, each coming in around 25-30 minutes…that’s kind of crazy to me. Overcompensating had 8 episodes coming in around 32-37 minutes and Adults also had 8 with 22 minute episodes. Wow.

The odd part, and why I’m calling it the gilded age of television, is all these shows are high-quality and aesthetically pleasing. None of them, maybe with the exception of Adults that looks more like a contemporary cable sitcom, look like they have a small budget. I mean Charli XCX (at the peak of her career) produces and appears in Overcompensating, and I Love LA is a HBO show. The costumes in all the shows are pretty good (have to mention because of recent gen-z costume design flops), the actors are great, but the writing makes you feel like you’re eating empty calories. It tastes amazing while you’re eating it, but you don’t really feel full afterwards, and you can’t just buy more because the gaps between season are so huge now. They say it’s because production value has increased, but again what’s the point of a show looking cinematic, if the plot can only carry you so far?

And I really hate to be shitting on these shows like this. I don’t think it’s Rachel Sennott or Benito Skinner’s fault. I love them, I follow their other projects (which have been great in the past) and they’ve introduced us to fresh, new talent like Owen Thiel, Odessa Azion, and True Whitaker. Many of them have great star power and I really really loved Overcompensating, but this eight episode, varying duration, model is not doing television any favors. We cannot relive the glory of Euphoria season 1 if we’ve LITERALLY lost the plot. Maybe studios like to think that audience are stupider than really are, but people are not satisfied with half-baked shows. I’m not satisfied with half-baked shows. I mean seriously, Adults having eight 22 minute episodes is an actual joke. That’s barely 3 hours for the whole season. While, Adults, Overcompensating, and I Love La have all been renewed for another season, I would not be surprised if people forgot about them in the long run. Which is a shame because all three shows have plenty of strengths that would shine more if given a little more time.

The Finale

To be honest with you, I don’t know how we get out of this. People will keep watching, I will keep watching, and they’ll keep taking years to churn out half-baked slop. Look at Stranger Things! It started off so strong in 2016 and nearly a decade later, it concludes in such a half-assed, hole-ridden manner. It’s sad, but it makes sense. Hollywood obviously doesn’t value our writers (see Writer’s Strike of 2023) and only sort of has their thumb on the pulse. Sure, our world has gotten superficial with the rise of social media and technology, but we’re still human and we still crave stories and connection. Shows like Euphoria are beautiful, yes, but they only work when there are strong characters and writing behind them.

Gen-Z needs shows like I Love LA, Overcompensating, and Adults because it’s what keeps us connected and helps us feel seen. More than anything it makes me sad because we deserve to have contributions made to the pop culture canon. We need the Carrie Bradshaws, Hannah Horvaths, and Rachel Greens to keep being made to create time stamps of our ever-evolving culture. I think we have plenty of talented individuals, including the ones listed here, that are more than capable of giving that to us, but it’s the senior citizens at the top preventing that from happening. I suppose only time will tell how we get out of this. Maybe we need to follow the independent film industry’s lead and take matters into our own hands. Ah, well. I guess, I’ll see you guys in 2030 to talk about season 2 of I Love LA.

It’s a tale as old as time. The media writes the narrative of whatever celebrity depending on their needs as an entertainment outlet and the public opinion of them swings like a pendulum. Now add the layer of social media where think pieces and hate trains double up on the love and hate for celebrities and you have an even more volatile platform for celebs to rise and fall from. Chappell Roan and Charli XCX were THE it girls of 2024, with Chappell winning the public over with her creativity and festival run, and Charli triumphing with brat summer. But unfortunately artists cannot stay on top for very long without getting ran over by the inevitable hate train.

Now, in 2025, the narrative and public opinion has swung to the complete opposite side. Where Chappell was once celebrated for being outspoken and maintaining boundaries/privacy amidst her new fame, she is now being criticized for being “rude” and “entitled.” Similarly, Charli, who took the mainstream by storm with an album that was unapologetically her…was recently diminished by users on X for a silly little sash she wore after her Coachella set that said, “Miss Should Be Headliner.” With one x user saying, “Imagine being so far up your own ass that u think ur more popular than green day after one mediocre edm album that was overplayed by coke addicts on tiktok…”

I don’t think anyone can ever claim to know the goings on of the celeb world from an outside perspective. I think there are valid criticisms from what we see online, BUTT (so big of a “but” I had to use two t’s) it’s a pretty terrible system to build artists up just to tear them down for questionable reasons.

Like I said, I can’t claim to know Chappell too well, but I do think she has every right to demand respect from the crowd of photographers and fans invading her space. We’ve seen many celebrities crumble from the shear weight of existing in the public eye (a la Amanda Bynes, Britney Spears, Justin Bieber) and the general public cannot even begin to imagine what it must be like to constantly have their space invaded and interactions constantly monitored. Hell, I used to work in customer service and God only knows the amount of times I was unnecessarily bitchy because I was sick, tired, or annoyed. Who knows what she’s actually like, but she makes incredible art and is quite respectable for trying to maintain peace and privacy in her new reality.

As for Charli, it’s incredibly disheartening to see the pendulum swinging on her after working in the industry for years. Perhaps I’m taking the hate comments on her Coachella sash personally, but it really is sad to see when she’s been writing and producing hits over the last decade. She’s been apart of many incredible pop culture phenomena including, “Boom Clap” which was featured in the hit 2014 movie The Fault in Our Stars, “Fancy” with Iggy Azalea, “Speed Drive” that was featured in the 2023 Barbie movie, and “Hot Girl” that was featured in the A24 film Bodies Bodies Bodies. But if that weren’t enough, she’s written hit songs for artists like Selena gomez (Same Old Love and Bluest Flame), Camilla Cabello and Shawn Mendes (Señorita 2019), THE Blondie (A few songs off their album Pollinator), and even composed the soundtrack for the 2023 film Bottoms.

ALL that to say…Charli XCX has more than earned her place in the music industry and even goes into depth on her struggles with being in the mainstream, but not necessarily being recognized the same way as other artists in this interview with Zane Lowe. We’ve seen it with Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, once a female artist has been in the spotlight for too long, the pubic grows bitter and hateful, but why shouldn’t she revel in her success? It’s been a long time coming for her. And to be quite honest with you…yeah, she maybe should have been a Coachella headliner. Not because she’s better than Green Day (I don’t think you can really compare the two), but because it was her year and maybe she deserved to headline after all these years of hard work.

Regardless, my message is exactly what the title says…stop the CHate! Leave these women alone and respect their work (and the fans of their work) because they are just as valid and important to the greater culture as the other artists.
